Concrete Driveways Hamilton

We pour concrete driveways across Hamilton City and out through the Waikato, on new builds, replacements, widenings and repairs. Plain and broom finishes, exposed aggregate, coloured concrete and stamped patterns all come off the same crew, over a base we compact in layers with the falls set before the first dig. Where the driveway meets the kerb we build the vehicle crossing to the specification Hamilton City Council publishes. Ten years of driveways behind us, and a five star rating on Google.

The ground under Hamilton changes over short distances, from pumice gravel to silt to peat. The city counted 64,890 private dwellings at the 2023 Census, 6,729 more than five years earlier. New subdivisions come with fill, and a slab poured over two different ground densities will find the join between them. So the first visit is about the ground, the access for the truck and where the water is meant to go. We measure it on site, we price it, and the number comes back to you in writing before anything is booked.

Driveway Work

Concrete Driveway Finishes, Replacements and Repairs

Six kinds of driveway job cover almost everything we quote. Driveways are the biggest part of the concrete work we take on across Hamilton, and the same crew pours all of it. The finish decides the look and the grip. What parks on it decides the slab underneath.

Concrete driveway leading to a residential garage door

Plain and Broom Finish Driveways

Most of the driveways we pour in Hamilton are a broom finish, and that is the right call for a straight run down the side of a house. The broom texture gives grip on a wet slope and hides the tyre marks that show up on a smooth trowelled surface.

A 100 mm slab over a compacted base takes cars, utes and vans without complaint. Tell us if a trailer or a caravan lives on it, because that is a thicker slab and a deeper dig.

Exposed aggregate driveway with a curved edge

Exposed Aggregate Driveways

Exposed aggregate is the finish we get asked for most on a front driveway that people see from the street. We wash the top layer back while the concrete is still green so the stone comes through, which gives grip underfoot and a surface that hides tyre marks.

Choose the stone before the site visit. The aggregate decides the colour of the finished driveway and it is the one thing that cannot be changed after the pour.

Charcoal coloured concrete driveway between a fence and a building

Coloured Concrete Driveways

Colour earns its place on a driveway that has to sit with a dark roof or dark cladding, and the coloured driveways we pour carry oxide right through the mix. A chip shows the same colour underneath, so the driveway keeps its tone as it wears.

Colour holds better over a broom finish than a smooth one, because the texture breaks up the light. Bring the roof or joinery colour to the visit and we will match against it.

Stamped concrete driveway pattern in Hamilton

Stamped and Patterned Driveways

Stamped concrete is the finish we lay when someone wants the look of pavers without the joints for weeds to come through. The pattern goes into the slab before it sets, so the crew gets one window to line it up and no second pass at it.

That single window is why stamped work goes in the diary on a settled forecast. Decide the pattern and the release colour before the pour date, because both are locked in the moment the concrete goes down.

Concrete driveway replacement in Hamilton

Driveway Replacement and Break-Out

Replacing a driveway is the job we take on once the old slab has broken up past repair, and the break-out is most of the work. The old concrete comes out, gets carted away, and the base underneath gets checked before anything new goes down.

That base is usually why the first slab failed. We will not pour over ground that has not been re-compacted, so tell us if the driveway has been dug up before for a pipe or a cable run.

Smooth grey concrete panels divided by cut joints

Driveway Repairs and Resurfacing

A cracked driveway is worth repairing when the crack is stable and the panels either side sit level, and that is the first thing we check on site. Stable cracks get stitched and filled, a settled slab can be lifted, and a sound base takes a resurface.

Where the panels have stepped, the ground underneath has moved and a new surface hides it for a season. You will hear that from us before you spend anything on it.

The Build

How We Build a Concrete Driveway

Five steps from the first phone call to the day you park on it.

01

Driveway Site Assessment

We measure the driveway, check the fall from the garage down to the kerb, and look at whether a concrete truck can get close enough to pour. Free, and nothing is booked off the back of it.

02

Written Quote and Finish Selection

The price comes back in writing with the finish, the slab thickness and the base build-up set out. You choose the finish off that before any concrete is ordered.

03

Vehicle Crossing Approval

Where the driveway meets the kerb, Hamilton City Council approves the crossing before construction and inspects it throughout. The crossing is built to the Regional Infrastructure Technical Specification and we work the inspection dates into the programme.

04

Break-Out, Base and Mesh

Old concrete comes out first where there is any. We dig to depth and compact 100 mm of GAP20 basecourse under the slab. The 665 mesh then goes up on chairs so the steel finishes 30 to 40 mm below the surface, where it can hold a crack shut.

05

Pour, Cut and Cure

We pour, screed and finish to the texture you picked. Control joints get cut at 3 metre centres to a quarter of the slab depth, inside 24 hours of the pour in warm weather and 48 hours when it is cold. The slab is then kept damp for seven days while it cures.

Concrete Driveway Prices in Hamilton

A new concrete driveway in Hamilton is priced around the finish, the vehicles it needs to carry and the ground it sits on. Plain and broom finishes are the starting point. Coloured concrete and exposed aggregate cost more because the finish changes the materials and labour on pour day.

Replacement work costs more than a new driveway on bare ground because the old slab has to be broken out, removed and the base checked before the new driveway goes down. Slope, drainage and access can also change the scope.

These figures are a guide and not a quote. We measure every driveway on site before pricing it, and the quote comes to you in writing.

Driveway workGuide range
New plain or broom finish driveway$100 to $150 / m²
New coloured concrete driveway$120 to $170 / m²
New exposed aggregate driveway$130 to $200+ / m²
Existing driveway replacement, including break-out$120 to $180 / m²

What Moves the Price of Your Driveway

Vehicle load. A 100 mm driveway suits cars, utes and vans. A boat trailer, horse float or truck changes the slab thickness, steel and excavation. Tell us what will park on it before we quote.

New driveway or replacement. New work starts with excavation and a prepared base. Replacement also includes breaking out the old slab, carting it away and checking why it failed.

Finish choice. Plain and broom finishes sit at the lower end. Colour, exposed aggregate and stamped work add materials and labour on pour day.

Ground and base. Fill, soft ground and an old base that has moved all need attention before a new driveway is poured. The base is where the long-term result is decided.

Drainage and slope. Falls must carry water away from the garage and house. A channel drain or soak pit can be part of the job where the section does not drain naturally.

Site access. A truck that reaches the pour is the cheapest outcome. Tight access needs extra planning and labour, which adds hours.

Shape and edges. A long straight driveway is quicker to form than the same area cut into curves, steps, narrow returns or several parking bays.

Vehicle crossing. Where the driveway meets the kerb, we allow for Hamilton City Council approval and inspection in the programme and quote.

Why Us

Why Homeowners Pick Us for a Concrete Driveway

Six things that decide whether a driveway is still flat in ten years. Every one of them happens before the finish goes on.

Falls Set Before the First Dig

Water off a driveway has to go somewhere, and on a flat Hamilton section that gets decided before anything is excavated. We set the fall away from the garage door and the house wall, and where a section will not drain on its own we put in a channel drain or a soak pit.

Basecourse Compacted in Layers

A driveway fails from underneath. We compact the basecourse in layers, because one thick lift looks identical on the day and settles through the first winter. The New Zealand roading specification caps a single layer at 200 mm for that exact reason.

Mesh Sits Inside the Slab

Mesh laid flat on the base does nothing at all. We lift ours on chairs so the 665 sits 30 to 40 mm down, inside the concrete where it can hold a crack closed. It is the easiest part of a driveway to get wrong and it cannot be fixed once the pour is done.

Crossings Built to the Council Specification

Hamilton City Council requires every vehicle crossing to be approved before construction and inspected throughout, and the crossing itself is built to the Regional Infrastructure Technical Specification. We schedule the inspections around the pour date so the concrete order holds.

One Crew From Break-Out to Final Cut

The people who break out the old slab are the people who cut the joints in the new one. Nothing gets handed to a second crew halfway through, so nobody has to guess what the ground was like under the old driveway.

The Slab Matches What Parks On It

A driveway carrying two cars is a different build to one taking a boat trailer or a horse float. We build to the load you tell us about, so mention anything heavy at the site visit, including the things that only turn up at Christmas.

Ground and Council

Hamilton Ground Under a Concrete Driveway

A concrete driveway in Hamilton has two ends, and they answer to different people. The private end is yours. The end that crosses the footpath and meets the kerb is a vehicle crossing, and Hamilton City Council controls it.

Council states it plainly. All vehicle crossings must be approved by Council and inspected by staff throughout construction. That covers a new build, a second crossing added to an existing site, and rebuilding a crossing that is already there. A like-for-like rebuild is not exempt, and that is the part people assume their way past.

A standard crossing carries three inspections: one before the pavement goes in, one before the pour, and a final one at the end. The crossing is built to the Regional Infrastructure Technical Specification, section 3 Transportation, clause 3.3.19. We book the inspections around the pour date so a missed one does not push the concrete out a week.

The other half of a Hamilton driveway is the ground under it. Hamilton City reached 174,741 people at the 2023 Census and the districts either side grew faster again, so a lot of new driveways are going down on sections cut and filled to make a level building platform. Fill and undisturbed ground compact at different rates, and a slab will always find the join. If your section was levelled for the build, say so at the site visit, because it changes the base depth and the reinforcing.

Water is the third one. On a flat section the fall gets designed in before the dig, because a driveway that ponds against the garage door was a levels decision made badly at the start.

My driveway was cracked all over and needed replacement as it was very old and worn off. I called Hamilton Concrete Contractors for a quote and consultation. Olly came over the next day to have a look and suggested the solution that best suited to my driveway's condition. I really liked the friendly vibes from Olly and he sounded like he genuinly cared. I got 3 more quotes from other companies but they were very transactional in my opinion. I liked Olly's approach and vibe so decidied to go ahead with him. He did an exceptional job for me and I am happy with the service.

Common Questions

Concrete Driveway FAQs

The questions people ask before booking a driveway, answered here so you do not have to ring for them.

Between $100 and $180 per square metre installed. Plain and broom finish sit at $100 to $150, coloured runs $120 to $170, and exposed aggregate starts near $130 and can pass $200 on a hard site. A standard 30 square metre driveway lands between $3,000 and $4,500. We measure on site before pricing anything.

The crossing at the kerb is the council part. Hamilton City Council requires every vehicle crossing to be approved before construction and inspected throughout, and that applies to rebuilding an existing crossing as much as adding a new one. We build the crossing to the Regional Infrastructure Technical Specification and schedule the three inspections around the pour date.

100 mm over a compacted base. That is the New Zealand minimum for a residential driveway and the thickness the Concrete Contractors Association specifies. Soft or clay ground goes to 150 mm. Under the slab sits 100 mm of compacted GAP20, and the steel is 665 or 668 mesh lifted on chairs. The mix is 20 MPa, and 25 MPa where the driveway carries heavier vehicles. Anything taking a truck or a horse float gets designed for that load.

Seven days, and ten through a Hamilton winter. You can walk on it carefully after a day or two, though keep off the edges and corners because they are the last part to gain strength. Concrete keeps gaining strength long after the pour, and 28 days is simply the age at which its specified compressive strength is checked. Heavy vehicles wait for the full month.

Sometimes, and the crossing decides it. Where the crossing at the kerb is sound it can stay while the private part of the driveway is replaced. Where it is being rebuilt, Council approval applies to that rebuild the same as it would to a brand new crossing.

Concrete shrinks as it dries, so it will crack. Control joints decide where. We cut ours at 3 metre centres to a quarter of the slab depth, which gives the shrinkage a straight line to follow. A joint cut too shallow or too late controls nothing, and the slab then cracks wherever it wants to.

Yes, with limits. The New Zealand concrete construction standard stops placement below 5 degrees on a falling thermometer and 2 degrees on a rising one, so a hard frost pushes a pour to the next morning. Below 10 degrees the concrete sets slower and gains strength slower, which is why the wait before you can park on it goes out to ten days over winter.

The rough length and width, the finish you like, and anything heavy that parks on it. A photo of the access helps. It lets us plan the pour and allow the right labour before we quote. If the section was cut and filled for the build, tell us then.

All of Hamilton City, from Rototuna and Flagstaff through to Glenview and Hillcrest, and out to Cambridge and Te Awamutu. Driveways further out get quoted on the size of the job.
