Concrete Contractors Cambridge

Hamilton Concrete Contractors pours driveways, house slabs, foundations, patios, paths and shed floors across Cambridge, and has worked the Waikato for over ten years. We lay plain broom finish, exposed aggregate, coloured and stamped concrete, and we do replacements as often as new work. Cambridge and Leamington together held 18,882 residents at the 2023 Census, up from 16,767 in 2018, across 7,842 dwellings. Cambridge North alone grew by two thirds in those five years. Most of that growth is new slab and new driveway.

We work to Waipa District Council rules in Cambridge, and they differ from Hamilton City rules in ways that change a job. Plan Change 26 became operative on 30 August 2024 and moved every residential property in town into the Medium Density Residential Zone. Site impermeability there is capped at 60 percent of net site area, and at 45 percent inside the Cambridge North Structure Plan area. We measure the existing hard surface before pricing a new one. Waipa also requires an approved contractor for every vehicle crossing.

The Concrete Work We Take On in Cambridge

Six job types cover most of what we pour in Cambridge and Leamington. Each one has its own ground preparation, its own finishing window and its own Waipa District Council touchpoint.

Concrete driveway leading to a residential garage door

Driveways and Vehicle Crossings on Waipa District Roads

We build the driveway and the vehicle crossing as one job, which matters in Cambridge because Waipa District Council accepts crossing work only from a contractor on its approved register.

The crossing runs from the road to your boundary. The driveway runs from the boundary in. Both need the same falls, or water sits at the low point.

Tell us at quoting stage if a horse float or a truck uses the entrance. Waipa specifies light and heavy vehicle crossings differently.

Concrete house foundations in Hamilton

House Slabs and Foundations in the Cambridge Growth Cells

Our crews pour house slabs across the Cambridge growth cells, and a new section there needs its own ground assessment before anyone talks slab design.

Waipa District Council has identified about 5,900 dwellings across Cambridge North and the C1, C2, C3, C4 and C6 growth cells by 2035, on 536 hectares of residential land. Sections in those cells run 500 to 800 square metres, with compact lots at 300 to 400.

Bring us the geotechnical report that came with the section.

Exposed Aggregate and Coloured Concrete for Cambridge Frontages

Washed and exposed aggregate is the finish we recommend for a Cambridge front driveway, because the stone hides tyre marks and leaf stain better than a plain broom finish.

Colour goes in the mix or on the surface. Oxide through the truck gives an even body colour. Dry shake gives a stronger surface tone.

Pick the finish before we pour, since exposing the stone is a timed operation on the day.

Concrete Patios and the Waipa Outdoor Living Space Standard

Patio slabs are where we start when a Cambridge client wants usable outdoor space, because the Medium Density Residential Zone already sets a size to design against. Every ground floor dwelling needs 20 square metres of outdoor living space with a three metre minimum dimension, and a patio can count toward it.

Set the slab a step below the door threshold. Fall it away from the house at a steady grade.

Tell us where the downpipes land before we set levels.

Shed Floors and Rural Slabs Around Hautapu and Fencourt

Shed floors and lifestyle block concrete take us out past the Cambridge town boundary, into rural Waipa where the drainage rules and the entrance standard both change.

Waikato Regional Council still controls the Rotomanuku, Fencourt and Hautapu drainage areas, so a yard slab out there has to shed water somewhere that already works.

Rural entrances are specified differently from urban ones. Send us a photo of the existing entrance.

Non slip concrete finish in Hamilton

Concrete Replacement on Older Cambridge Sections

We break out and replace old Cambridge driveways more often than we patch them, because a 1970s section usually has cracking across the whole slab rather than one bad panel.

Removal is the part people underestimate. Old concrete comes out, the base gets re-compacted, and the new levels get set off the crossing and the garage.

Ask us for an honest read on the day. Some slabs are worth cutting out in sections only.

Cambridge Job Process

How a Cambridge Concrete Job Runs, Step by Step

Five stages, from the first visit to the day you park on it. The Waipa District Council entranceway approval sits in the middle, and it sets the earliest start date on any job touching the road.

01

Site Visit From Maeroa to Your Cambridge Section

We drive out from Maeroa and walk the section with you. Levels, falls, truck access and where the water currently goes. Waipa District Council states plainly that its stormwater network has limited capacity, so the discharge point matters.

02

Written Quote Measured Against the Impermeability Cap

We measure the existing hard surface, add the new area, and check it against the 60 percent site impermeability cap for the Medium Density Residential Zone. Cambridge North sections are held to 45 percent. The quote goes to you in writing.

03

Waipa District Council Entranceway Approval

Where the job touches the road, Waipa District Council must approve the crossing location before site works begin, and only a contractor on its approved register may build it. A council tree near the entrance needs its own approval first.

04

Excavation and Base on Hinuera Ground

Excavation comes out to depth, then basecourse goes in and gets compacted in layers. Cambridge ground is unconsolidated Hinuera alluvium, variable across a single section, so we compact and test as we go. Boxing and mesh go in last.

05

Pour, Finish and Cure Before Vehicles Return

Concrete arrives from the plant, gets placed, screeded and finished to the specification you picked. We cure it, then tell you when to walk on it and when to put a vehicle back on it. Waipa leaves crossing maintenance with the owner.

Waipa District Council Rules That Shape Concrete Work in Cambridge

Cambridge concrete is governed by the Waipa District Plan, and the numbers below are the ones we work to on site. The first table lists the Medium Density Residential Zone standards that limit how much of a section can be sealed. The second sets the Cambridge position beside the Hamilton City one, because the two authorities control hard surfaces in different ways.

What We Check Before Pricing a Cambridge Job

Access comes first. A truck needs a clear run to the pour, and a Cambridge section behind a character frontage often has a narrow entrance and mature street trees to work around.

Existing hard surface comes second. We measure the roof, the paths and the current driveway, then work out how much impermeable area the section has left under the Medium Density Residential Zone cap.

Ground condition comes third. Hinuera alluvium is variable across a single section, so the depth of excavation and the amount of basecourse can change between one end of a driveway and the other.

Then the road boundary. Any work touching the Waipa road reserve needs the crossing location approved before site works start, and the council requires a Traffic Management Plan or a Corridor Access Request before it will process the application.

Finally the finish. Exposed aggregate, coloured and stamped work each carry their own timing on the day, and the pour is planned around that.

Hamilton Concrete Contractors in Cambridge

Why Cambridge Owners Bring In a Maeroa Based Crew

Six things that separate a Cambridge job from a Hamilton one, and how we handle each.

Over Ten Years in the Waikato Concrete Trade

Hamilton Concrete Contractors has been in the trade over ten years, working Hamilton and the wider Waikato. Cambridge is inside that patch. The crew, the plant and the finishing gear that pour a Hamilton driveway are the same ones that arrive in Leamington.

We Quote Against the Waipa District Plan

We price Cambridge jobs against Waipa District Council standards, not the Hamilton City ones we use at home. Plan Change 26 put every residential property in Cambridge into the Medium Density Residential Zone on 30 August 2024, and the impermeability cap there is a percentage of net site area.

The Waipa Approved Contractor Rule on Every Crossing

Waipa District Council will only accept a vehicle crossing built by a contractor on its approved register. We tell you that at the quote, before anyone books a truck. The council also needs the crossing location signed off by an officer before site works begin.

Cambridge, Leamington and the Growth Cells

Our patch in Cambridge covers the older streets north of the river, Leamington to the south, and the growth cells on the western and northern edges. Waipa District Council has about 5,900 dwellings identified for those cells by 2035. New sections and old ones need different preparation.

Ground Preparation on Hinuera Alluvium

Cambridge sits on the ash mantled Hinuera Formation, laid down by the ancestral Waikato River between about 23,500 and 17,000 years ago. The material is unconsolidated and highly variable. We compact in layers and test as we go, because assuming a uniform base is how slabs crack.

Written Quotes After a Cambridge Site Visit

We come out to Cambridge, measure the area, and send the price in writing. The visit happens before the price, every time. Seeing the falls, the access and the existing discharge point changes what we specify. Cambridge sections vary more than a photo shows.

Cambridge Ground Conditions

The Hinuera Terraces, Waipa Stormwater and Cambridge Growth

Cambridge sits on the ash mantled Hinuera Formation, the volcanic alluvium the ancestral Waikato River spread across the Hamilton Basin. The river avulsed at Piarere near Karapiro about 23,500 years ago, and deposition ran on until roughly 17,000 years ago. The river then entrenched into its modern channel through a series of failed downcutting episodes, leaving the terraces Cambridge is built on and shallow paleochannels crossing them. The material underneath is unconsolidated and highly variable, running from cross stratified gravelly sands to sandy gravels and silts. Waikato Regional Council records Taupo Pumice Alluvium as the dominant bank material along much of the valley downstream of Cambridge.

Two things follow for a slab. Compaction has to be checked across the whole footprint, because one end of a section can sit on channel fill and the other on a low ridge. Soakage cannot be assumed either. Waipa District Council states that the soil in the Cambridge growth cells has poor absorption. The C2 and C3 developments therefore drain through planted swales and a piped outlet to the Waikato River.

The town is also growing hard. Waipa District Council has identified roughly 5,900 new dwellings across Cambridge North and the C1, C2, C3, C4 and C6 growth cells by 2035, on 536 hectares. Another 1,920 dwellings sit on 272 hectares beyond that. At the 2023 Census the nine statistical areas covering Cambridge and Leamington held 18,882 residents and 7,842 dwellings, up from 16,767 residents in 2018. Cambridge North alone went from 1,737 people to 2,898. Both totals are summed across the nine areas.

Every one of those sections needs a driveway and a path, and every one sits under the 60 percent site impermeability cap of the Medium Density Residential Zone. Waipa publishes the full standard in its medium density land use guide. The concrete crews we run out of Hamilton work to that standard on every Cambridge job, the same way we work to Hamilton City rules at home.

My driveway was cracked all over and needed replacement as it was very old and worn off. I called Hamilton Concrete Contractors for a quote and consultation. Olly came over the next day to have a look and suggested the solution that best suited to my driveway's condition. I really liked the friendly vibes from Olly and he sounded like he genuinly cared. I got 3 more quotes from other companies but they were very transactional in my opinion. I liked Olly's approach and vibe so decidied to go ahead with him. He did an exceptional job for me and I am happy with the service.

Cambridge Concrete Questions

Concrete Questions We Get Asked in Cambridge

Seven answers on Waipa District Council rules, Cambridge ground and how a Hamilton crew schedules work out of town.

Call 07 808 6940 or send the address and we book a site visit. We come out to Cambridge, measure the area, check the falls and the access, and send the price in writing. The visit costs nothing. Tell us the finish you want at that point, because exposed aggregate, coloured and stamped work each change how the pour is planned.

Yes, we travel to Cambridge and Leamington from our base at Maeroa in Hamilton. Travel changes the booking more than it changes the work. We group Cambridge jobs so the crew, the plant and the finishing gear make one run east in a week. Give us a little flexibility on the start date and the job slots in sooner. Concrete supply is booked once the date is fixed.

The property owner applies to Waipa District Council, and we work to the approval once it is granted. The council must approve the crossing location before any site works begin, and it may set special conditions at that point. Only a contractor on the approved register the council keeps may build the crossing. If a council tree sits near the entrance, a separate tree approval has to be granted first.

Cambridge sits on the ash mantled Hinuera Formation, an unconsolidated volcanic alluvium of cross stratified sands, sandy gravels and silts laid down between about 23,500 and 17,000 years ago. The material varies across a single section. We compact the base in layers and check it as we go. Waipa District Council also records poor absorption in the Cambridge growth cells, so surface water gets a designed path rather than a soak pit.

Allow several weeks from the first call, with most of that sitting outside the concreting itself. The site visit and written quote come first. If the job touches the road, the Waipa District Council crossing approval has to be granted before site works start, and that step sets the earliest date. Excavation, base and boxing take a day or two. The pour is one day, then the slab cures before vehicles go back on it.

Most Cambridge sections are capped at 60 percent site impermeability under the Medium Density Residential Zone, measured on net site area and counting the roof, the paths and the driveway together. Inside the Cambridge North Structure Plan area the cap drops to 45 percent. The St Kilda Structure Plan area works to 700 square metres for site coverage and impermeable surface. We measure what is already there before quoting new work.

Character controls in Cambridge affect buildings and setbacks, and they reach a concreter through access. Three Character Streets in Cambridge carry a six metre road boundary setback. The town also has four Character Clusters and five Character Cluster Qualifying Matter Overlay areas, taking in Grey Street, Victoria Street, Grosvenor Street and Queen Street. Older frontages there often have mature street trees and narrow entrances, so we plan truck access early.
