Why Water Is the Deciding Factor on a Dinsdale Section

Dinsdale sits high and drains slowly, so the question on most sections is where the water goes once the concrete is down. Hamilton City Council’s practice note sets the thresholds that decide whether soakage can carry any of it, and the District Plan sets how much hard surface the section can take. Both tables below are read together on site.

The Ridgeline Down Tuhikaramea Road

Hamilton City Council’s catchment plan puts a defined ridgeline along Tuhikaramea Road at the western extent of the Waitawhiriwhiri catchment, with Wallace Road carrying the same boundary further east. A ridge running down a street means the two sides of that street shed water in opposite directions. One property drains towards the catchment, the one across the road drains away from it, and the stormwater connection each of them uses is different.

Council describes the same ridgeline running from the Temple View area through to the northern extent of Forest Lake. The elevation varies from about 75 mRL at the south-western end to around 55 mRL near Forest Lake. Twenty metres of fall across a few kilometres is gentle in the walking sense and decisive in the drainage sense. Till’s Lookout on Melva Street looks across to Mount Pirongia, and a walking track runs from there towards Taitua Arboretum.

For a concrete job the practical effect is simple. We survey the fall on the section before pricing, because the direction the water leaves changes the falls, the joint layout and the size of any retention device.

Ground and Water

High Ground in Dinsdale That Does Not Soak

Dinsdale reads as good ground and behaves as difficult ground. Hamilton City Council’s geotechnical assessment of this catchment records a series of low hills emerging above the plain. They reach approximately 60 m RL east of Lake Rotoroa and approximately 75 m RL at the north-western margin of the catchment. Those hills comprise a sequence of ignimbrites and tephra from several sources together with fine grained volcanoclastic alluvium. The same report describes the low hills as predominately fine-grained, with relatively poor permeability and soakage properties. Stormwater soakage systems within these soils are judged not likely to be favourable.

Height is doing the work that permeability is not. Groundwater in the low hills zone is put at likely three to five metres below ground level. Across the catchment as a whole it is typically within the upper three metres of sediments. Council warns that the moderately well drained classification is likely to be a reflection of raised elevation and the separation to the water table. Council also states that reliance on S-map drainage properties is not recommended without site specific testing when soakage potential and runoff are being considered.

Peat sits south of here, not underneath. The southern portion of the Waitawhiriwhiri catchment is recorded as very poorly drained and generally correlating with the extents of the historic Rukuhia Swamp. Those are different sections with a different problem.

The infrastructure news is better. Dinsdale does not appear on Council’s list of catchments with wastewater capacity constraints, while neighbouring Nawton does. Water supply into the western suburbs was upgraded with roughly 6.7 km of new gravity fed main, in sizes from 280 mm to 800 mm. The new line runs from Gibson Road through to Newcastle Road and Avalon Drive, and a Dinsdale Reservoir serves the area.

Before we design any soakage device we read the thresholds Council sets out in its soakage practice note and test the soil on the section. The same falls-first method runs through the driveways, slabs and patios we pour around Hamilton.

Do you work on the gully sections in Dinsdale?

Yes, with the earthworks limits checked first. Council’s natural areas schedule records a 2.99 hectare Dinsdale gully in the north east of the suburb, surrounded by dense housing and divided from the Waitawhiriwhiri Reserve by State Highway 1. Where the Waikato Riverbank and Gully Hazard Area is mapped, a site is allowed 25 cubic metres of earthworks a calendar year, cut and fill each capped at 0.5 m, clean fill only.
