What Changes a Pirongia Concrete Job

Zone. Pirongia holds Residential, Large Lot Residential, Commercial and Rural land inside a few hundred metres, and the crossing width allowed on each differs under Rule 15.4.2.3. We confirm the zone before we form anything at the boundary.

Subgrade. Weathered volcanic material varies over short distances on the slopes below the mountain. Where it will not compact, the base gets undercut and replaced, which adds cartage and machine time.

Falls and drainage. Poorly drained ground holds water against a slab, so the falls have to be set before the first dig, and the outfall has to go somewhere real.

The Ground Under Pirongia and the Waipā District Plan

Pirongia sits at the foot of an eroded stratovolcano. The Waikato Regional Council catchment plan records Karioi and Pirongia as stratovolcanoes composed of andesite and basalt, erupting around 2.5 million years ago. The same document calls the predominant geology of the Waipā zone volcanic material including tephra. Hamilton is a different proposition. University of Waikato work names the Hamilton Basin ground as the Hinuera Formation, a volcanogenic alluvium laid down by the ancestral Waikato and Waipā rivers. Those deposits run up to 60 m thick, most recently laid between about 22,000 and 17,000 years ago.

Practically, a Pirongia site can hand you weathered volcanic material that changes character within a few metres. The Department of Conservation states that poorly drained soils keep tracks on the mountain muddy well after rain. On a slab that means water sitting against concrete unless the falls and the outfall are set before the first dig. We probe the subgrade at the assessment and build the base off what is actually there.

The planning side is Waipā throughout. The Waipā District Plan puts a Character Precinct of roughly 6.8 hectares over the old commercial heart of the village. Pirongia is one of six such precincts, alongside Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Ōhaupō and Cambridge North. Cultural landscape areas follow the Waipā River and the Mangapiko Stream, and a mapped Waipā River flood area of around 576 hectares sits across the low country. A battle site area covers Matakitaki. Rural earthworks are capped at 1,000 m³ in a calendar year under Rule 4.4.2.74. The geology behind all of this is set out in the Waikato Regional Council Waipā Zone Management Plan.
