Concrete Contractors Nawton

Hamilton Concrete Contractors pours driveways, slabs, patios and paths across Nawton, a suburb of roughly 8,100 residents at the 2023 census across its eastern and western halves. Nawton East held 4,377 people that year and Nawton West 3,756. Between them the two areas contain 2,868 dwellings. Growth here is slow. The suburb added 258 people in the five years to 2023, so most of our work sits on established sections where the original concrete is decades old.

We test the ground on site before quoting a Nawton job, because no published Hamilton catchment management plan names the suburb. The four published catchment plans each name their own sub-areas, and Nawton appears in none of them. We also work around live Council construction. The Nawton Community Link is widening footpaths, narrowing kerbs at intersections and removing flush medians on a named list of streets. Access and footpath reinstatement change on any job that touches the road.

Nawton Concrete

The Concrete We Pour Across Nawton

Five job types cover almost everything quoted in Nawton. The suburb counted 8,133 residents in 2023, up from 7,875 five years earlier, so replacement work and additions to existing houses outnumber new builds here. Each block below says what changes on a Nawton section.

Concrete Driveways and Replacements in Nawton

Hamilton Concrete Contractors pours new driveways in Nawton and breaks out the worn ones, which is the choice most owners here are weighing up. A slab cracked across its width and settled at the crossing will not hold a resurface.

Break-out hands the base back to us, so fall, depth and mesh position all get set again. Residential driveways run 100 mm on compacted basecourse for cars, utes and vans. Where the crossing at the road is rebuilt as part of the job, Council approves that section and inspects it throughout.

House Slabs, Garage Pads and Shed Floors

Our crew lays house slabs, garage pads and shed floors across Nawton, the work that follows when an established section takes a second building. Slabs go in to the engineer design where one exists.

Good ground under B1/AS1 means soil capable of permanently withstanding an ultimate bearing pressure of 300 kPa, and we confirm that in the hole. A garage pad carries point loads a patio never sees, so thickness and reinforcement are set from what the building will hold.

Patios, Paths and Frontage Footpaths

We pour patios, side paths and frontage footpaths in Nawton for owners whose back lawn holds water through winter. Fall is most of the job on a path.

Levels are set so surface water leaves the area and moves away from the house. Paths go in at 75 mm to 100 mm depending on whether a mower or a vehicle crosses them. A path running out to the street has to meet the Council footpath as it is built, and Council is rebuilding footpaths on part of Nawton right now.

Shared Access Ways and Second Dwellings

Access ways get poured wider and thicker than a single driveway, and Hamilton Concrete Contractors builds them for Nawton owners putting a second dwelling behind the house. Plan Change 12 became operative on 20 December 2024.

In its plan change booklet Council proposed medium density around suburban centres, and every named centre was given a 400 m catchment except Nawton, held to 200 m. A shared way carries two households and a truck on moving day, so the falls and the slab build step up, while the crossing stays inside the residential 3 m to 5.5 m at the boundary.

Concrete Repairs, Levelling and Resurfacing

Repair and resurfacing work is what we put forward in Nawton when a slab has settled or lifted while the base under it is still sound. A single cracked panel can be cut out and repoured without disturbing the rest.

Surface wear, spalling and tired colour come back with a resurface. We look for the cause first, because a slab that sank over a soft spot will sink again under a new topping. The test hole tells us whether the trouble is the topping or the ground.

What Is Actually Known About the Ground Under Nawton

Nothing published settles the question. Hamilton catchment management plans assess named suburbs one by one, and Nawton is not among them, so no desktop document describes soakage or groundwater under a Nawton section. The first table shows what each plan actually covers. The second shows what we check on site before a Nawton price goes out.

Why the Test Hole Matters More in Nawton

Council consultants wrote, of the Waitawhiriwhiri catchment that covers Dinsdale and Frankton, that “Reliance on the S-map drainage properties is not recommended without site specific testing when considering soakage potential, and runoff.” The warning was written about a catchment Nawton sits outside. The nearest published assessment stops before the suburb starts, so mapped soil data is a weaker guide here again.

Hamilton City Council publishes a soakage practice note, and it sets the standard we work to. At least one percolation test is required for every soakage device constructed, carried out where the device will actually sit. Devices have to be positioned above the winter high water table, and peak soil wetness in Hamilton usually falls between July and September. A test dug in February can flatter a section that will not take water in August.

So the hole gets dug. Digging it takes an hour and settles the depth, the design and the drainage route before anyone commits to a number.

The Nawton Build

How a Nawton Concrete Job Runs

Four stages from the first site visit to the day the Nawton pour is finished and cut.

01

Site Visit on the Nawton Section

We measure the area, check the fall from the house down to the street and note where water is already going. Access from the road is checked at the same visit, because it decides how the concrete gets placed.

02

Nawton Test Hole and Percolation Test

A hole goes in where the work will sit, and we read what the ground gives up. Where a soakage device is proposed, a percolation test runs at the device position, which is what the Council practice note asks for.

03

Written Quote and Nawton Street Levels

The price comes back in writing with the slab thickness, the reinforcement, the finish and the falls set out. Levels are tied to the existing footpath and crossing, and Council is rebuilding footpaths on part of Nawton.

04

Council Crossing Approval and Corridor Access Request

Where the job touches the road, Council approves the vehicle crossing and inspects it throughout construction, and a Corridor Access Request is approved before work starts. Residential crossings run 3 m to 5.5 m at the property boundary.

Why Us

Why Nawton Owners Pick Us for Concrete

Four things that decide whether a Nawton slab is still flat and draining in ten years.

The Ground Gets Tested on Every Nawton Job

No catchment plan names Nawton, so there is no document to lean on. A test hole goes in on the section itself. The Council soakage practice note asks for a percolation test at each device location, and that is where ours is dug.

Levels Set Against the Nawton Footpath

Council is rebuilding footpaths and narrowing kerbs at intersections on eleven named Nawton streets. Finished levels get set against what will be there, not only what is there today. Where a crossing forms part of the job, the existing footpath is removed and reconstructed in the same material.

Basecourse Compacted in Layers on Nawton Sections

A slab fails from underneath first. We compact basecourse in layers rather than tipping it in one lift, and depth is confirmed in the hole before mesh goes near it. Residential driveways sit at 100 mm over that base.

Wastewater Pockets and Rule 25.13.4.2A

Council lists Nawton among the isolated pockets of the city where parts of the wastewater network are constrained. New impermeable surface over 20 m² has to retain at least 10 mm of runoff depth on site under Rule 25.13.4.2A. We check both before a Nawton price is written.

Ground and Council

Nawton Falls Outside Every Published Catchment Plan

Hamilton publishes four integrated catchment management plans, covering Waitawhiriwhiri and City Centre, Te Awa o Katapaki and River North, Te Rapa, and Rotokauri. Each one names the sub-areas it assesses. The Waitawhiriwhiri plan works through Dinsdale, Maeroa, Frankton, Melville, Hamilton Lake and the CBD by name. Rotokauri covers roughly 788 hectares west of the Mangaheka catchment. Te Rapa covers roughly 1,140 hectares in the north. Nawton appears in none of them.

The gap matters because the fallback is mapped soil data, and Council consultants warned against leaning on it. Their advice on the Waitawhiriwhiri catchment was that S-map drainage properties should not be relied on for soakage potential or runoff without site specific testing. The Council soakage practice note then requires at least one percolation test for every soakage device constructed, dug at the position the device will occupy, with the device sitting above the winter high water table.

We publish no peat depth, soil series or groundwater level for Nawton. Nothing supports one. Waikato Regional Council does record that the peat bogs on the western side of the city have the potential to result in localised subsidence. The observation is regional and describes western Hamilton at large.

Council also lists Nawton, alongside St Andrews and Rototuna, among the isolated pockets where the wastewater network is constrained. A constrained area is one where the pipes carrying wastewater are already full or nearly full during and following heavy rain. The constrained parts are small areas inside the suburb.

Above ground, the shared path and crossing programme Council is running through Nawton is widening existing footpaths, narrowing kerbs at intersections, removing flush medians and adding signals at the Grandview Road crossing opposite Nawton Primary School. Stage one built a path from Rotokauri Road to Derby Street and new paths through Crawshaw Park, Dominion Park, Derby Park and Elliott Park. Ellicott Road, Grange Avenue, Enfield Street, Aberfoyle Street, Hyde Avenue, Durham Street, Leyton Place and Clancy Place sit on the same list. Council dates for the later stages disagree, so we work to what is on the ground the day we set out. Nawton jobs run through the same Hamilton concreting crew that covers the western side of the city, and every section gets walked before a price is written.

My driveway was cracked all over and needed replacement as it was very old and worn off. I called Hamilton Concrete Contractors for a quote and consultation. Olly came over the next day to have a look and suggested the solution that best suited to my driveway's condition. I really liked the friendly vibes from Olly and he sounded like he genuinly cared. I got 3 more quotes from other companies but they were very transactional in my opinion. I liked Olly's approach and vibe so decidied to go ahead with him. He did an exceptional job for me and I am happy with the service.

Common Questions

Concrete Questions From Nawton Homeowners

What Nawton owners ask before booking a pour, answered with the figures we work to.

Call 07 808 6940 or send the form on this page. We come out to the section, measure the area, check the fall and dig a test hole where the work will sit. The written price comes back with the slab thickness, the reinforcement, the finish and the drainage route set out. The site visit and the quote are free.

Timing is set by the ground check and the crossing more than by the pour. Where the work touches the road, Council has to approve the vehicle crossing and a Corridor Access Request has to be approved before anything starts. Where a soakage device is part of the design, the percolation test happens first, and results move with the season, since peak soil wetness in Hamilton usually runs from July to September. A start window comes with the written price.

Council controls it. Every vehicle crossing in Hamilton has to be approved by Council and inspected by Council staff throughout construction, including a rebuild of an existing crossing. Residential crossings are 3 m minimum and 5.5 m maximum at the property boundary. The existing footpath is removed and reconstructed in the same material, and a Corridor Access Request is approved before work starts. We build the crossing to that specification and work around the inspections.

Untested until someone digs. No published Hamilton catchment management plan names Nawton, so there is no desktop assessment of soakage or groundwater to read for the suburb. Council consultants have said mapped S-map drainage properties should not be relied on for soakage or runoff without site specific testing. We dig a test hole on the section, and where a soakage device is proposed we run a percolation test at the spot the device will occupy.

Only if the job touches the road. The Nawton Community Link is widening footpaths, narrowing kerbs at intersections and removing flush medians on streets including Rotokauri Road, Derby Street, Ellicott Road, Grandview Road, Grange Avenue, Enfield Street, Aberfoyle Street, Hyde Avenue, Durham Street, Leyton Place and Clancy Place. The dates Council has published for the later stages disagree, so we check the kerb line and the footpath level on site on the day we set out.

Yes, once the new impermeable surface passes 20 m². District Plan Rule 25.13.4.2A requires development of new impermeable surfaces greater than 20 m² to provide retention of at least 10 mm of runoff depth on the new area, through rainwater capture connected to the building for non-potable reuse and infiltration via targeted soakage within the lot boundary. Sealed and compacted metal driveways count as impermeable. Porous and permeable paving is excluded.

Yes, and access decides how it is done. In its plan change booklet Council proposed medium density around suburban centres and gave Nawton a 200 m catchment, the tightest of any named centre in the city. A second dwelling usually needs a shared access way, poured wider and to a heavier build than a single driveway. We check truck access from the street first, because a pump changes both the price and the day.
