Concrete Contractors Raglan

Hamilton Concrete Contractors pours concrete driveways, house slabs, patios, paths and steps in Raglan and Whale Bay, and repairs or resurfaces older concrete that has seen a few coastal winters. Finishes run from plain broom through to exposed aggregate and coloured concrete. The business has more than ten years in the Waikato concrete trade, and Raglan sections ask more of a slab than most. They fall steeply toward the water, sit on soft sand along the harbour margin, and catch salt air off the Tasman.

Much of Raglan’s housing stands empty for part of the year, so a good share of the work here is booked by owners who live somewhere else. The company plans every Raglan job around that. Levels, falls, the finish and the coastal exposure of the address are all settled at one site visit, the written quote follows, and progress photos come through as the job runs so it can be followed from anywhere.

Raglan Concrete Work

Concrete Services We Deliver Across Raglan and Whale Bay

Six job types cover almost everything quoted between the Raglan wharf and Whale Bay. Each one is priced from a measured site visit. Each one is shaped by the ground, the fall and the salt air on that particular section.

Concrete Driveways

We pour new concrete driveways in Raglan and Whale Bay, replace old ones that have cracked or sunk, and widen narrow ones to fit a second car or a boat. The standard slab is 100 mm of 20 MPa concrete on a compacted base, which takes cars, utes and vans.

A campervan, truck or boat trailer needs 125 mm or 150 mm, so tell us what parks there. If the job reaches the road, we build the crossing to Waikato District Council’s approval.

House Slabs and Foundations

Hamilton Concrete Contractors forms and pours house floor slabs, extension foundations, and garage and shed slabs on Raglan sections. A new house or extension is built to the engineer’s drawing, which sets the slab thickness, the steel and any thickenings.

Garage and shed slabs without a designed detail are sized to what they will carry. Send the plans if you have them, and say whether the site has had a geotech investigation.

Concrete patio in Hamilton

Concrete Patios and Deck Bases

Our crew lays concrete patios, courtyards and outdoor living areas, plus the concrete bases that decks, pergolas and spa pools sit on. Every patio is laid with a gentle fall away from the house, so rain runs off the slab and away from the walls.

Finishes run from plain broom to exposed aggregate and coloured concrete. Tell us how you plan to use the space, where the edges should run, and whether anything heavy will sit on it.

Concrete path laid in Hamilton

Concrete Paths and Steps

We build concrete paths and formed steps around Raglan sections, from a short run to the washing line to a path that drops down a bank. On a slope the riser height is set on site with a level, so every step in a flight is the same height.

Paths and steps get a textured finish, because they get walked on wet. Tell us where the path starts and finishes, and whether a mower or wheelbarrow has to use it.

Non slip concrete finish in Hamilton

Exposed Aggregate and Coloured Concrete

Most of the decorative work we lay in Raglan is exposed aggregate or coloured concrete, on driveways, patios, paths and pool surrounds. Exposed aggregate shows the stone through the surface, which gives grip on a slope and hides tyre marks and dirt. Coloured concrete has the pigment mixed right through, so the colour runs the full depth of the slab.

Bring a photo of a finish you like to the site visit.

Concrete Repairs and Resurfacing

Cracked, chipped and sunken concrete is the usual reason Raglan owners call us for repairs, and we also resurface tired driveways and patios that are still sound underneath. A stable crack can be cut, filled and sealed. A slab that has moved gets broken out and replaced, because a new surface over a moving base cracks again.

We tell you which one you have at the site visit. Photos sent with your enquiry help us bring the right gear.

The Raglan Build

How a Raglan Concrete Job Runs

Four stages run from the first call to the finished slab. Where the job includes a new or altered entranceway, the Waikato District Council approval sits inside them.

01

Raglan Site Visit, Levels and Access

On site we measure the area, take levels, check how close a truck and pump can get, and photograph the boundary and the kerb line. On a sloping section the levels shape the whole job, so a Raglan visit runs longer than one on a flat Hamilton site.

02

Written Quote and Finish Choice

The price comes back in writing with the area, the slab thickness, the reinforcing, the finish and the drainage detail listed line by line. Nothing is ordered and nothing starts until you accept it.

03

Waikato District Council Entranceway Approval

Waikato District Council reviews new and altered vehicle entranceways through its corridor team. The applicant lodges an entranceway application and a corridor access request, and a road corridor engineer inspects the site before and after construction.

04

Break-Out, Base, Mesh and the Pour

Old concrete comes out, the base goes in compacted in layers, and the mesh sits up on chairs inside the slab. Concrete is ordered to land inside its placing window, so the crew is boxed and ready before the first truck reaches Raglan.

Why Us

Why Raglan Property Owners Book Us

Four habits that come from working a coastal town over the hill from Hamilton.

Coastal Exposure Checked for Your Address

Exposure is a distance question. MBIE determination 2019/039 records zone D as within 500 metres of the sea including harbours, or 100 metres from tidal estuaries and sheltered inlets. Raglan township sits on the harbour edge. We measure that distance for your address before the quote goes out.

Raglan Visits Booked in Blocks

We group Raglan site visits so one trip over State Highway 23 covers several properties. For you that usually means a shorter wait between the first call and someone standing on the section with a level.

One Crew From Break-Out to Finish

The crew that boxes your Raglan job is the crew that pours and finishes it. Nobody new turns up halfway through needing the levels explained again, and the same people who dug out the base are the ones who cut the joints.

Progress Photos for Owners Who Live Away

When the owner is in Auckland or overseas, photographs do the job a site meeting would. We send them at break-out, at the compacted base and at the pour, so the parts that end up hidden under concrete are on record.

Coastal Exposure and Ground Data for Raglan Concrete

Most of what changes on a Raglan concrete job is already written down. MBIE determination 2019/039 sets out how NZS 3604 classifies coastal exposure by distance from salt water. Waikato Regional Council’s Whāingaroa catchment management plan records the slope, the rock and the stormwater path behind the town, and an earlier council report maps the harbour margin and the cliffs. The two tables set those findings beside what each one changes on site.

Exposure zoneHow the guidance describes itDistance stated in the guidance
Zone DCoastal areas with high risk of windblown sea-spray salt depositsWithin 500 m of the sea including harbours, or 100 m from tidal estuaries and sheltered inlets
Zone CInland coastal areasWithin 5 km from salt water including harbours
Sea spray zoneDefined as zone D, including all offshore islands and the area within 500 m of the coastlineMay be extended inland by prevailing winds and local conditions

Source: MBIE determination 2019/039, quoting NZS 3604. The table records what that guidance states about exposure classification.

Raglan conditionWhat the published source recordsWhat it changes on a concrete job
Slope68 percent of the Whāingaroa catchment is moderately steep or steeper (Waikato Regional Council TR2024/08)Cut and fill volumes, retained edges, formwork set on a grade
Harbour marginThe low-lying sandy area from Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive to Kopua Point is the critical area (Waikato Regional Council TR2008/14)Base depth and compaction proved before mesh goes down
CliffsThe unprotected cliffs in Raglan township are named a priority (Waikato Regional Council TR2008/14)Edge setback and support decisions near a fall
Underlying rockMostly sedimentary siltstone at 50 percent and sandstone at 21 percent (Waikato Regional Council TR2024/08)Break-out method and excavation time
StormwaterCollected via catchpits and channels and directed to the receiving water of the Whāingaroa harbour (Waikato Regional Council TR2024/08)Falls set so the slab drains to that network

What Changes the Scope of a Raglan Concrete Job

Distance from salt water. The exposure zone turns on how close the section sits to the sea, the harbour or a tidal inlet, and the guidance allows for prevailing winds pushing it further inland.

Gradient. A steep entrance needs cut, fill and often a retained edge before the boxing goes in.

Ground type. Sandy harbour margin and imported fill both need the base proved and compacted in layers.

Truck access. A narrow right of way or a long carry from the kerb changes the placing method, and a pump adds a booking of its own.

Holiday Homes

Raglan Holiday Homes and Owners Who Book From Away

At the 2023 Census the Raglan statistical area held 3,717 people and Whale Bay 1,020, up from 3,327 and 972 in 2018. The same two areas counted 2,490 dwellings, and 1,764 of them were occupied on census night. Close to three in ten stood empty, and that pattern shows up in who books Raglan concrete work. A good share of it is commissioned by owners who will not be in town when the trucks arrive.

An absent owner changes how a job is run more than how it is built. Every decision that would normally get made over the fence on the day has to be made at the site visit instead. Where the concrete starts and stops, which way the falls run, the finish and the colour all go into the written quote before anything is ordered.

Tell us at that visit who can let the crew onto the section, whether a neighbour shares the access, and which weeks you plan to be down. A fresh slab has to stay clear of cars while it gains strength, and a family arriving for the long weekend with a boat trailer is the usual way that rule gets broken.

My driveway was cracked all over and needed replacement as it was very old and worn off. I called Hamilton Concrete Contractors for a quote and consultation. Olly came over the next day to have a look and suggested the solution that best suited to my driveway's condition. I really liked the friendly vibes from Olly and he sounded like he genuinly cared. I got 3 more quotes from other companies but they were very transactional in my opinion. I liked Olly's approach and vibe so decidied to go ahead with him. He did an exceptional job for me and I am happy with the service.

Common Questions

Raglan Concrete FAQs

The questions Raglan property owners ask before booking a pour, answered plainly.

Call 07 808 6940 or send the address and a rough size of the area. We measure the site, take levels and check truck access, then send a written price setting out the area, slab thickness, reinforcing, finish and drainage detail. Nothing is ordered until you accept it.

Through the exposure zone your address falls in. For concrete exposed to the weather on a timber-framed house, clause 4.5.2 of NZS 3604 sets a minimum of 25 MPa in zone D, the band closest to the sea, against 20 MPa in zone C and 17.5 MPa in zone B. That is why the zone gets settled at the site visit, before any concrete is ordered.

The base work changes most. A steep section needs cut and fill, often with a retained edge, before any boxing goes in, and the falls are worked out so water leaves the slab where you want it to. On sand or old fill the base is compacted in layers and checked before the mesh goes down, because a slab is only as steady as the ground under it.

The Waikato District Council corridor team reviews it, and the property owner or their agent lodges the paperwork. The paperwork is a vehicle entranceway application and a corridor access request, backed by a site plan, photographs and a beforeUDig report wherever the dig goes deeper than 140 millimetres. A road corridor engineer inspects the site before and after construction. We build the crossing to the approval and work in with those inspections.

Raglan township, Whale Bay and the sections between them, with the crew travelling out from Hamilton. Raglan sits in the Waikato District, so Waikato District Council is the roading authority for any entranceway work. The site visit, the written quote and the crew are the same ones that run our Hamilton jobs.

Yes, and a lot of our Raglan jobs run that way. Everything is agreed at the site visit, someone you nominate lets the crew onto the section, and photographs come through at each stage so you can follow the work from wherever you are.

Broom finish, exposed aggregate, coloured concrete and stamped patterns, plus repair and resurfacing work on older slabs. A broom finish is the plain option that keeps its grip on a wet slope. Decorative finishes go down on the same measured base, so the choice can wait until the site visit.
