Concrete Contractors in Pukete: Driveways, Slabs, Patios & Foundations

At Hamilton Concrete Contractors we have had concrete layers on Pukete jobs for ten years, on the streets running between Pukete Road and the river. We replace driveways and cart the old slab away. We seal cracks, lift sunken panels and resurface slabs that are still sound underneath. We also pour new driveways, house slabs, garage pads, shed floors, patios, paths and steps, in plain and broom, coloured concrete or exposed aggregate. Pukete was built out through the 1960s and 1970s, and Pukete School opened on its present site in May 1973 with 235 pupils.

That makes a lot of Pukete concrete about fifty years old, and fifty years is a long time for a slab sitting on ground that changes across a single section. Pukete lies on the Hinuera surface, a pattern of low bars and swales where free-draining sandy loam on the high ground gives way to poorly drained silt in the hollows between. We find that join before we pour across it.

Concrete Work We Do Around Pukete

Six jobs cover the Pukete work, and most of them start with concrete that is already there. In a suburb where the driveways went in with the houses, the useful question is usually which of these six a slab actually needs.

Concrete Driveways and Full Replacements in Pukete

Driveways are the job Pukete calls us for most, and on a fifty year old section the honest version is usually a full replacement rather than a patch.

We break out the old slab, cart it, rebuild the base and pour fresh at 100 mm with 665 or 668 mesh on chairs. Where a boat or a trailer lives on the driveway we go to 125 mm. The break-out is priced as its own line so the demolition cost is visible.

House Slabs, Garage Pads and Shed Floors in Pukete

Slabs and pads are the work we take on for Pukete owners adding a sleepout, a double garage or a workshop at the back of a long section.

A house floor slab takes Grade 500E ductile mesh at 2.27 kg per square metre under the acceptable solution, over polythene with 150 mm laps. A shed floor follows what goes on it. Say if a hoist or heavy racking is planned, because that is a decision about steel, not about finish.

Crack Repair and Panel Levelling

Crack repair suits a Pukete slab where the crack has settled and the concrete either side is still bearing properly.

We cut out, fill and seal stable cracks, and lift panels that have dropped without breaking up. A crack that is still opening will come back through any filler inside a season, so we say when repair is the wrong call and we say it before you spend.

Resurfacing Over a Sound Slab

Resurfacing is the option we offer where a Pukete driveway is flat, sound and simply worn out to look at.

A new surface over stable concrete is a fraction of the cost of replacement and it lasts if the slab underneath is genuinely stable. Over panels that rock or step it lasts about one winter, because the movement comes straight back through. We walk it with you before either job gets quoted.

Patios and Outdoor Living Areas in Pukete

Patios in Pukete usually go in where a 1970s house has a back yard that was never really used, and the levels are the first thing to sort out.

We hold the finished surface below the cladding line, 150 mm above paving for weatherboard, fibre cement and plaster, and run about 25 mm per metre of fall away from the house. On a swale section we also make sure the water is not being sent to the lowest corner of the lawn.

Side Paths, Steps and Access Runs

Paths and side access are what Pukete sections tend to need once the driveway is done, because most of them have a single narrow side that turns into mud in winter.

We pour at 100 mm, above the 75 mm published minimum for a path, and step it where the ground falls away. Where the path passes a downpipe or a gully trap we set the levels so the water still reaches it after the concrete goes in.

The Sequence

How We Replace Fifty Year Old Pukete Concrete

Four steps for a replacement. The first one decides whether the other three are worth doing.

01

Panel Walk and Ground Test

We walk each panel, look for stepping, rocking and ponding, then dig a test hole to see what the base is made of and whether the section sits on a bar or in a swale.

02

Written Quote With Break-Out Itemised

The quote separates demolition and cartage from the new slab, and names the excavation depth, the basecourse, the mesh and the finish.

03

Demolition, Cartage and Base Rebuild

The old slab comes out and leaves the site, then the base is dug out and rebuilt in compacted layers. Fifty year old basecourse that has already failed once does not get reused.

04

Steel, Pour, Joints and Cure

Mesh goes on chairs, we pour, screed and finish, then cut joints at 3 metre centres to a quarter of the slab depth inside 24 hours in warm weather. The surface stays damp for seven days.

Pukete Driveway Replacement and Resurfacing Prices

Most Pukete concrete work is priced against one of two decisions, replace it or resurface it, and the gap between them is wide enough to be worth getting right. The figures below are guide ranges as at August 2026, covering the work as it is normally done on a Pukete section, and they are indicative rather than a fixed price. We measure and assess on site, then send the number in writing.

Pukete driveway workGuide range (Aug 2026)
Full replacement, including break-out and removal$120 to $180 / m²
Resurfacing over a sound slab$40 to $80 / m²
Typical 60 m² replacement driveway$7,200 to $10,800
Typical 50 m² resurfacing job$2,000 to $4,000
New plain or broom finish driveway$100 to $150 / m²

What Sits Behind a Pukete Replacement Price

Which job the slab actually needs. Resurfacing and replacement are separated by a factor of three, and the condition of the base decides which one applies.

Break-out and disposal. Removing an old driveway is demolition, loading, cartage and tip fees before any new work starts.

What is under it. On a swale section the subgrade holds water and often has to be dug deeper and drained, which is machine time and imported material.

Thickness and steel. 100 mm with 665 mesh is the standard build. A boat, a trailer or a light truck takes 125 mm or more and heavier reinforcing with it.

Finish. Broom sits at the base of the range, oxide colour above it, exposed aggregate above that again.

Area and shape. A straight run to a single garage costs less per square metre than the same area with a turning bay, curves and a narrow return down the side.

Access. Pukete sections are generous but the side access is often not. Where a machine cannot get down the side, the work becomes slower and that shows in the price.

Tree roots. Where a root has lifted the slab, dealing with the cause is part of the job and it varies from a barrier to a redesigned edge.

The crossing. Where the work reaches the kerb, Council approval and inspection are in the programme and the footpath is reinstated in its original material.

Why Us

Why Pukete Owners Give Us the Old Slab

Six things that decide whether a replacement Pukete driveway outlasts the one it replaced.

We Check Which Soil You Have Got

Pukete sits on low bars and swales. Free-draining sandy loam on the raised ground and poorly drained silt in the hollows can occur on the same street, and sometimes on the same section. We dig a hole and look before specifying the base.

Base Dug Out, Not Poured Over

When a driveway comes out here, the base comes out with it. Basecourse that has spent fifty years under a slab and let it fail is not a foundation for the next one, whatever it looks like from the surface.

Joints Placed Where the Old Cracks Ran

Old cracks map where the slab wanted to move. We read them before setting the new joint layout, so the next slab is given permission to crack on a line we chose.

Terrace Sections Assessed Before We Cut

Sections along the Pukete river terrace sit near a free face. Council’s liquefaction study asks for particular attention to lateral spreading on land within 100 metres of a free face, so a terrace-edge job gets looked at properly before we cut anything.

Old Concrete Gone the Same Week

The demolition, the loading and the cartage happen inside the same visit as the excavation. You are not left with a stack of broken concrete on the berm waiting for a truck to come back.

Falls Surveyed Fresh on a Replacement

An old driveway that ponds does so for a reason, and repeating its levels repeats the puddle. We survey the falls fresh and take the water to a point that still works, which sometimes means a channel drain the original never had.

Bars and Swales

Why Two Pukete Driveways on One Street Age Differently

Two Pukete driveways on the same street can be the same age, the same thickness and in completely different condition, and the reason is under them. Pukete sits on the Hinuera surface, which University of Waikato research describes as a series of low ridges or bars and swales, formed by the ancient Waikato and Waipa rivers. On the slightly raised bar deposits you get Horotiu soils, well drained, with a tephra cover-bed mantle up to about 0.6 metres thick over coarse alluvium. In the lower swales you get Te Kowhai soils, poorly drained, formed on fine silt over grey sands. Bruntwood soils sit on the margins between them.

A slab over free-draining sandy loam has a subgrade that sheds water. A slab in a swale has one that holds it, and a subgrade that holds water in July is a subgrade that moves. That is the whole explanation for why one neighbour has a driveway with hairline joints and the next has panels that step.

Age is the other half. Pukete was developed through the 1960s and 1970s, Pukete School opened on its present site on 21 May 1973 with 235 pupils, and Hamilton City Council bought a 320 hectare block here from Waipa County Council in 1977 for urban expansion. The census reflects a suburb that finished long ago: Pukete West and Pukete East held 4,716 usually resident people and 1,644 dwellings between them in 2023, on 1.93 square kilometres, having grown by under five per cent across ten years.

Two more things are worth knowing locally. Sections near the river terrace sit close to a free face, and Council’s liquefaction desktop study places river terraces and gullies in the category where liquefaction damage is possible and asks for particular attention to lateral spreading within 100 metres of a free face under two metres high. And on the good news side, Pukete is not on Council’s published list of areas with three waters capacity constraints, which covers the south-west and parts of Hamilton East, Claudelands and Fairfield. The University of Waikato work on the landscapes and soils of the Hamilton Basin sets out the bar and swale pattern in full. Concreters working right across Hamilton City see the same soils in different order, and Pukete is where the two sit closest together.

Common Questions

Pukete Concrete Questions

The questions Pukete owners ask about an old driveway.

$120 to $180 per square metre including break-out and removal, so a typical 60 square metre driveway lands between $7,200 and $10,800. Resurfacing a sound slab runs $40 to $80 per square metre, or roughly $2,000 to $4,000 over 50 square metres. Guide ranges as at August 2026, and the real number follows a site visit.

Usually because the ground under it is not the same. Pukete sits on a pattern of low bars and swales, with well drained sandy loam on the raised parts and poorly drained silt in the hollows. A slab crossing that boundary sits on two different subgrades that behave differently in winter, and the joint between them is where it shows.

Only if the slab underneath is stable. Flat, solid panels with no stepping and no rocking take a new surface well and it lasts. Panels that move will move again and bring the new surface with them within a season or two. We walk it with you and tell you which one you have before you commit.

Yes, in the same visit as the excavation. Demolition, loading and cartage are part of the job and they are priced as their own line so you can see what removal is costing you.

It is worth assessing. Council’s liquefaction desktop study places river terraces and gullies in the category where liquefaction damage is possible, and asks for particular attention to lateral spreading where land sits within 100 metres of a free face less than two metres high. For a driveway that usually means checking edge support and drainage before we cut.

Not on its own. Cutting a root that is holding a mature tree is a decision with consequences beyond the concrete, and leaving it means the new slab lifts too. Depending on the tree we look at a root barrier, a thickened and reinforced section over the affected area, or moving the edge. We work that out before quoting.

Vehicles stay off for seven days, and ten days through a Hamilton winter, because strength gain slows below 10 degrees. Foot traffic is fine after a day or two provided you keep off the edges and corners.

All of Pukete, both sides of Pukete Road, plus the streets around Maui Street and Braithwaite Park, and the neighbouring suburbs of Te Rapa, Rotokauri, Forest Lake and Beerescourt.

My driveway was cracked all over and needed replacement as it was very old and worn off. I called Hamilton Concrete Contractors for a quote and consultation. Olly came over the next day to have a look and suggested the solution that best suited to my driveway's condition. I really liked the friendly vibes from Olly and he sounded like he genuinly cared. I got 3 more quotes from other companies but they were very transactional in my opinion. I liked Olly's approach and vibe so decidied to go ahead with him. He did an exceptional job for me and I am happy with the service.
