What Decides Where a Huntington Job Lands in That Range

Which job it actually is. A crack seal, a level and a full replacement are separated by an order of magnitude, and the slab decides which one applies.

The break-out, cartage, dig and base happen first, then the pour, then the cure. Huntington Concrete Is Reaching the End of Its First Life

Huntington is finished, and the census says so. Between 2018 and 2023 the usually resident population fell from 2,574 to 2,511, occupied private dwellings went from 858 to 837, and the total dwelling count moved by three, from 876 to 879. The median age went from 42.6 to 43.7, the oldest of the northern Hamilton suburbs. Nothing about those numbers describes a construction site.

What they do describe is a suburb where the original concrete is all roughly the same age. When a whole neighbourhood is built inside a decade, its driveways reach the end of their first life inside a decade too. That is why so much of what we do here is diagnosis rather than construction. A crack that runs along a control joint is doing what it was designed to do. A crack that wanders across a panel and steps is telling you the base has moved. Ponding after rain says the falls have gone or never existed. Panels that rock underfoot say there is a void underneath.

Mature planting is the other half of it. Street trees and garden specimens that went in with the houses have had forty years to find the moisture under a slab, and a root under a driveway will lift concrete that is otherwise in good order. Replacing the slab without dealing with what lifted it is a job you do twice.

One rule catches people out on a replacement. Rebuilding an existing vehicle crossing is not treated as exempt work. Hamilton City Council states that all vehicle crossings must be approved by Council and inspected by staff throughout construction, and the existing footpath has to be removed and reconstructed in the same material.
