Concrete Contractors in Rototuna: Driveways, Slabs, Patios & Foundations

At Hamilton Concrete Contractors our concrete layers have spent ten years working across Rototuna, on streets either side of Borman Road, Kay Road and Resolution Drive. We lay driveways, patios, paths, steps and the footpath across your frontage. We pour house floor slabs, garage pads, shed slabs and footings. We finish plain and broom, or in coloured concrete, exposed aggregate and stamped patterns. We repair, resurface, level and replace concrete that is already in the ground. Hamilton City Council describes Rototuna as nearing completion after fifteen years of building, so most of what we are called out for here is second-round work.

The Rototuna Structure Plan covers about 490 hectares brought into the city in 1989, and around three quarters of its main catchment was urbanised by 2016. So we spend more of our week here on second slabs, shed pads and infill driveways than on bare sections. We also take out plenty of original driveway that went in with the house and is now lifting at the joints.

Rototuna Jobs

Concrete Work We Take On Around Rototuna

Six jobs cover nearly everything we quote in Rototuna. On a suburb this far through its build-out the mix leans towards replacement, second slabs and the outdoor work people get done once the lawn has gone in.

Concrete driveway in Hamilton

Concrete Driveways in Rototuna

Driveways are the job we are called out to most on Rototuna sections, either a fresh pour on an infill lot or a replacement where the original has gone at the joints. What parks on it decides the slab, and where the water leaves it decides the falls.

A 100 mm slab carries cars, utes and vans. Boats, trailers and horse floats want 125 mm or more. Tell us at the site visit if the ground runs back towards the garage, because we set the falls before anyone digs.

House Floor Slabs and Footings in Rototuna

The floor slabs we pour around Rototuna are mostly for infill houses and minor dwellings going in behind an existing home, so access is the first thing we look at.

A slab on good ground takes Grade 500E mesh at 2.27 kg per square metre as its floor, and heavier steel where the engineer has designed it that way. If a pump has to reach over a roofline, say so early, because it changes how the day is set up.

Concrete patios in Hamilton

Patios, Courtyards and Outdoor Living in Rototuna

Patios are the second slab most Rototuna owners put in, usually a few years after the house, once the planting has taken and the section has settled.

We set a fall of about 25 mm per metre away from the house and hold the finished level below the cladding line, which is what keeps splash off weatherboard and plaster. A broom drawn across the fall gives grip without feeling rough under bare feet.

Exposed aggregate driveway in Hamilton

Exposed Aggregate and Coloured Finishes

The decorative work we do in Rototuna is mostly exposed aggregate on driveways and colour through patios, and both hide tyre marks and leaf stain better than plain grey does.

Exposed aggregate gets washed back on the day of the pour to bring the stone up, so we settle the depth of exposure on site with you watching the first wash. Colour is oxide mixed through the load, so there is no coating to flake off later.

Concrete path laid in Hamilton

Paths, Steps and Side Access

Side paths and steps are what people ask us for once a Rototuna section is fully planted and the mower stops fitting down the side of the house.

We pour paths at 100 mm as standard, above the 75 mm published minimum, because a path beside a driveway ends up with a wheel on it sooner or later. Steps come with the ground, since the rise and the going are set by the fall you already have.

Concrete driveway replacement in Hamilton

Driveway Repairs and Resurfacing

Repair is a job we will take on where the slab either side of a crack is still sound and the crack has stopped moving. Where a panel has stepped, the base under it has gone and a surface fix only covers the symptom.

We cut, fill and seal stable cracks, and we resurface slabs that sit level but look tired. We will also tell you when neither one is the answer.

How A Job Runs

How a Rototuna Concrete Job Runs

Five steps, from the first phone call to the morning the tape comes off the driveway.

01

Site Visit and Truck Access Check

We measure the area, check the falls, look at where a truck or a pump can stand, and ask what the ground does after a wet week. Nothing gets priced off a photograph.

02

Quote, Slab Thickness and Finish

The price comes back in writing with the slab thickness, the mesh, the finish and the excavation depth written into it. You decide from that.

03

Hamilton City Council Crossing Approval

Where a Rototuna job meets the road edge, Council approves the vehicle crossing before construction and inspects it while the ground is open. We hold time in the programme for it.

04

Break-Out, Basecourse and Mesh

Any old concrete comes out first. We dig to depth, lay 100 mm of compacted basecourse and set 665 or 668 mesh on chairs so it ends up 30 to 40 mm below the finished surface.

05

Pour, Joint Cutting and Seven Day Cure

We pour, screed and finish to the texture you chose. Control joints are cut at 3 metre centres to a quarter of the slab depth, inside 24 hours in warm weather and 48 hours in cold. The slab is then kept damp for seven days.

Concrete Driveway Prices in Rototuna

A driveway in Rototuna is priced by the square metre, and the finish is what moves it. The rates below are guide ranges current at August 2026 and they cover the excavation, the basecourse, the mesh, the pour and the finish. They are not a quote. We measure every Rototuna job on site before we put a number to it, and the number arrives in writing.

Rototuna driveway workGuide range (Aug 2026)
New plain or broom finish driveway$100 to $150 / m²
New coloured concrete driveway$120 to $170 / m²
New exposed aggregate driveway$130 to $200+ / m²
Existing driveway replacement, including break-out$120 to $180 / m²

What Changes the Number on a Rototuna Driveway

Vehicle load. A 100 mm slab suits cars, utes and vans. A boat trailer or a horse float needs 125 mm or 150 mm, which lifts both the concrete volume and the depth of the dig.

Reinforcing. 665 or 668 mesh is standard on a driveway. Ground that moves takes a heavier gauge or a designed steel layout.

Finish. A broom finish sits at the bottom of the range. Oxide adds colour through the load. Exposed aggregate adds the stone, the wash and the extra hands on the day.

Excavation and spoil. How deep we dig and how much material leaves the site. Cartage and tip fees are a real line on a Rototuna job because there is nowhere on a modern section to put spoil.

Site access. A truck that can reach the pour is the cheapest outcome. Narrow side access between an infill house and the boundary means a pump or a barrow run.

Break-out. Taking up an existing slab means demolition, loading and disposal before a single new thing happens.

Drainage and falls. Water has to leave the site somewhere. That can mean a channel drain, extra excavation, or a soak pit sized to a tested rate.

Shape. A long straight run costs less per square metre than the same area cut into curves, narrow returns and steps.

Vehicle crossing. Where the work reaches the kerb, Council approval and inspection sit in the programme.

Why Us

Why Rototuna Owners Pick Us for Concrete Work

Six things that decide whether a Rototuna driveway is still flat in fifteen years.

Drainage Planned Before the Excavation

Rototuna sections are flat, and flat ground gives water nowhere obvious to go. We work out the fall and the discharge point at the site visit, before a spade goes in, because a slab poured level is a slab that ponds.

Soakage Tested Before We Rely On It

Council expects soakage to be used where a tested infiltration rate comes back above 150 mm an hour, and the device has to sit above the winter water table. We test rather than assume, and if the ground fails we say so and price a different disposal.

Hard Surface Kept Inside the Zone Limit

In the General Residential Zone impermeable surface is capped at 70 per cent of the net site area. On a Rototuna section that already has a house, a garage and a driveway, we work out what is left before we design the patio.

665 Mesh Lifted Clear of the Base

Mesh lying flat on the basecourse does nothing for the slab. Ours goes on chairs and finishes 30 to 40 mm below the surface, which is the position that holds a crack together once one appears.

Control Joints at Three Metre Centres

Joints at 3 metre centres, cut a quarter of the way through the slab, inside 24 hours in warm weather. Curing concrete shrinks, and it will crack somewhere. The joint decides where.

One Crew on a Rototuna Section

The people who break out your old driveway are the people who screed the new one and come back to cut the joints. Nothing on a Rototuna job gets handed to a second crew halfway through.

Rototuna Ground and Rules

How Much Concrete a Rototuna Section Will Take

Rototuna is a suburb with a stormwater budget, and most people find that out when they go to add a patio. The catchment plan for Te Awa o Katapaki, which is the main drainage catchment under Rototuna, expects the residential area to reach 60 to 70 per cent impervious once it is fully built. The District Plan puts the limit on your own section at 70 per cent of the net site area in the General Residential Zone. A house, a garage, a driveway and a path get you a long way through that.

The second rule is the one that catches people. New or redeveloped impermeable surface over 20 square metres has to hold back 10 mm of runoff depth on site, and Council does not count sealed or compacted metal as permeable. Porous and permeable paving is excluded from the definition, which is the way through it on a tight section.

Soakage is the usual answer here and it is not automatic. Council’s own practice note expects soakage to be used where a percolation test comes back above 150 mm an hour, expects at least one test per device, and expects the device to sit above the winter high water table, which peaks between July and September. On the flatter Rototuna ground east of Kay Road we have seen both results on the same street.

Then there are the gullies. The Te Awa o Katapaki gully runs through the suburb as an ecological corridor and a stormwater path, its edges cannot be privatised, and earthworks in the Waikato riverbank and gully hazard area are capped at 25 cubic metres per site per year with cut and fill limited to half a metre. If your section backs onto the gully, that cap is the first thing we check. It is also worth knowing what the soakage practice note Hamilton City Council publishes asks for, because it is the document your stormwater design will be measured against. None of this changes the concreting we do across the rest of Hamilton, it just changes the order we do it in here.

My driveway was cracked all over and needed replacement as it was very old and worn off. I called Hamilton Concrete Contractors for a quote and consultation. Olly came over the next day to have a look and suggested the solution that best suited to my driveway's condition. I really liked the friendly vibes from Olly and he sounded like he genuinly cared. I got 3 more quotes from other companies but they were very transactional in my opinion. I liked Olly's approach and vibe so decidied to go ahead with him. He did an exceptional job for me and I am happy with the service.

Common Questions

Rototuna Concrete Questions

What Rototuna owners ask before booking concrete work.

Between $100 and $150 per square metre for a plain or broom finish, $120 to $170 for coloured concrete and $130 to $200 and over for exposed aggregate. Replacing an existing driveway including break-out runs $120 to $180 per square metre. Those are guide ranges current at August 2026, not a quote. The number for your section comes after we measure it.

Two separate parts of the job can involve Council and they answer different questions. The vehicle crossing, where the driveway meets the kerb, must be approved by Council before construction and inspected by Council staff throughout, and that covers rebuilding an existing crossing as well as forming a new one. Residential crossings run 3 m minimum to 5.5 m maximum measured at the property boundary. Behind the boundary, the rule that reaches the driveway itself is a stormwater one. Development of new impermeable surface over 20 square metres in a residential zone has to retain 10 mm of runoff depth on site, Council counts a sealed driveway as impermeable, and porous or permeable paving is excluded from that definition. Most Rototuna driveways are comfortably over 20 square metres. We confirm which of the two your job triggers at the site visit, before you have spent anything.

In the General Residential Zone the District Plan caps impermeable surface at 70 per cent of the net site area. A house, a garage, a driveway and a path take you a long way through that budget before a patio is even drawn. We measure what is already sealed on your section and work out what is left before designing anything new. Porous and permeable paving sits outside Council’s definition of impermeable surface, which is usually how the last piece fits onto a section that is already close to the cap.

Sometimes. Council expects soakage to be used where a percolation test returns better than 150 mm an hour, with at least one test per device and the device sitting above the winter high water table. Rototuna results vary street to street, so we test first and design the disposal around the result.

100 mm is the New Zealand minimum for a residential driveway and it suits cars, utes and vans. Go to 125 mm or 150 mm if a boat, a trailer or a light truck will sit on it. On soft or clay ground the published guidance is 150 mm. Anything genuinely heavy gets designed to the load rather than picked off a table.

Walk on it after a day or two, keeping off the edges and corners. Vehicles after seven days, and ten days through a Hamilton winter, because concrete gains strength slowly once the air drops below 10 degrees. Concrete is commonly assessed against its specified 28-day compressive strength, and strength development carries on after that.

Yes, with a check first. Earthworks in the Waikato riverbank and gully hazard area are limited to 25 cubic metres per site per calendar year with cut and fill capped at half a metre, and gully edges in the Rototuna Structure Plan area cannot be built over or privatised. We look at the mapped extent before quoting anything that involves moving ground near the edge.

All of it, plus the streets that sit either side of it. That means Rototuna West and East, the newer blocks off Borman Road and Hare Puke Drive, the older sections south towards Wairere Drive, and neighbouring Flagstaff, Huntington and Chartwell.
